Questions & Answers

Q. WHAT IS MICROPIGMENTATION?

A. Micropigmentation, also known as permanent make-up and

cosmetic tattooing, is the art and science of implanting

color into your skin. It is putting the right color in the right

place so you can look better naturally. Specialized instruments

are used to place color into the layer of skin known

as the dermis. Because the outermost layer of the skin, the

epidermis, is always shedding and renewing itself, you are

looking at the color through a thin veil of skin.

When a procedure is initially completed, the color will

appear substantially darker than the final result. This

is because the color is in BOTH the epidermis and the

dermis. The color in the top layer will flake off during

the healing process, lightening the overall effect.

Q. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO HEAL?

A. Generally, the color will be intense for the first three

days. You may also experience light to moderate swelling,

especially with eyeliner and lip color. After the first three

days, the healing skin will begin to gently flake off.

Within a week you should be very comfortable with

your permanent make-up.

Q. DOES IT HURT?

A. Topical anesthetics have been developed specifically for

micropigmentation procedures. These creams and gels are

applied to the skin before, during and after the procedure

to assure you of the most comfortable experience possible.

Many clients describe the sensation as a “tingling” feeling.

On a scale of 1-10, most rate the pain between 0-3. It may

be helpful to know that most women are more sensitive to

pain just before and during a menstrual cycle.

Q. WILL IT LOOK NATURAL?

A. Yes, the HEALED result will look natural. The healing

process can take up to 21 days. Remember, your permanent

make-up will look more dramatic for the first 3-7 days. You

may choose to plan ahead for a little “down time”, though

most clients return to their normal routine immediately following a procedure.

Q. HOW LONG WILL IT LAST.

A. Micropigmentation last a long time but not forever. As you

become accustomed to your new make-up it’s not uncommon

to want more. The darker the color the longer it will

stay unchanged in your skin. Natural or lighter colors are

often times more vulnerable to the effects of the sun,

swimming and breakdown by the body’s natural response.

Other factors that contribute to fading include medications,

smoking, metabolism and lifestyle.

Q. WHAT IF I DECIDE TO HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY

SOMEDAY?

A. No problem. A good artist will work conservatively,

respecting the natural lines and features of the face.

Q. WILL I STILL HAVE TO TWEEZE AND/OR TINT MY

BROWS?

A. Yes. Micropigmentation does not affect the hair growth

or color in any way. It only colors the skin under the hair.

Q. ARE THERE DIFFERENT PIGMENT COLORS?

A. Of course! Pigments come in many, many different shades.

The appropriate color will be customized to suit your

specific coloring.

Q. WHAT IF I’M SENSITIVE OR ALLERGIC TO MAKE-UP?

A. Allergic reactions to iron oxide pigments are extremely

rare. Though the FDA does not approve these pigments,

it does generally consider iron oxides the safest. Many

women who are allergic to conventional make-up choose

cosmetic tattooing as a successful alternative. For those

with severe sensitivities, patch testing is recommend at

least 6 months prior to having a procedure.

Q. WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIFIC NEEDS?

A. You may have specific needs for micropigmentation such

as scars, alopecia, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, breast

reconstruction, vitiligo, blindness or other health issues.

Cosmetic tattooing is a wonderful and very successful

solution to these types of issues.

Q. WHAT ABOUT MRI’S?

A. By all means, get an MRI if you need one. New MRI

equipment rarely causes any problems, though there

have been a few cases reporting slight burning and/or skin

irritation. An industry-funded study (2002) concluded there

is minimal risk to patients. For more information visit

www.mrisafety.com.

Q. ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

A. Because this is a cosmetic invasive procedure, there are

risks as well as benefits. These include infection, allergic

reaction, misplaced color, scarring, undesired result or

color. It is very important to work together, please feel free

to ask questions. During the initial consultation phase we

will chose colors and placement together. As always, be

sure to follow Post Procedural Care instructions.
